Chapter 9
Olivia paced about the sitting room, glancing at the large oak outside the window, now turning a rustic sienna color with the coming autumn. Ten days had gone by since the letter was sent and still no word from her uncle. What would she do if she didnât hear from him or if, heaven forbid, something had happened? Where would she go? She considered it as she paced, her mind a jumble of thoughts.
As time passed, she felt increasingly beholden to Mrs. Hamilton and her daughter for her stay here. The lack of money to pay for her lodgings weighed heavily on her. She tried helping around the house but with Georgiana there earning money by also doing chores and cooking, Olivia felt she was becoming a burden. She must also do something soon about the cargo stored at the lifesaving station. Each day she grew more anxious for its safety. If her uncle did not come soon, she would need to hire someone to help her transport the goods to the mainland. She would also need to locate a reputable buyer. But before all that, she would need something of value just to help pay the expenses. Perhaps she could open one small crate and try to barter with the general store in Hatteras Village.
âWhatâs troubling you, Olivia?â a voice inquired.
Olivia turned to see Sally standing in the doorway with a wicker basket over one arm, dressed in a cape and hat as if ready for an excursion. No doubt she was taking a walk with her beau, who came calling nearly every noon hour. âJust praying that my uncle writes me soon.â
âIt takes time to send word from here to the mainland and vice versa. You will hear soon, Iâm sure.â
Olivia smiled at the young womanâs optimism, hoping it would lift her own spirits. Some days she would walk among the dunes, gazing at the lifesaving station beyond a few of the humble dwellings and think about Jake. Why him of all men? He had words of wisdom, to be sure. He possessed a fine Christian nature. How far she felt from godly things though, and especially the way he thought of things. She had never considered it until now. Christianity to her had always been simply a religion, not a life that one lived and breathed. Jacob Harris lived it like no one she had ever met. And she was beginning to fall in love with its truthfulness and purpose, its freedom and its peace...and maybe with the man too, though she couldnât be certain of anything.
Olivia felt a hand on her arm and looked back to find Sally still there. âCome with me,â Sally coaxed. âIâm going to the ladiesâ sewing circle. You can meet the others.â
âIâm afraid I wonât be much help. I donât sew.â After the encounter with the grizzled man on the street, Olivia had been avoiding the public altogether these days.
âIâll teach you. It will give you something to do rather than pining away here.
